The team members of the Rural Medical Device Reprocessing department are committed to ensure patients leave in better health than when they entered. Through their high standards, attention to detail and communication with other departments, they minimize potential adverse events that effect patient outcomes in the surgical environment.

The team’s work is very detailed and requires precise focus on the task at hand. Surgical instruments that are found to not function correctly are immediately pulled from service and the Operating Room is notified immediately for specialty instruments. Team members carefully clean and disassemble instruments, inspecting them constantly. Once an instrument has been manually cleaned and inspected it is put through a washer/disinfector. Once this cycle is done, it moves on to the assembly person on the clean side to inspect each instrument for debris, pits, sharpness and ease in opening and closing. Team members then assemble the instrument according to set instructions and send it to be sterilized once it has been audited.

Every area within the department must work within Canadian standards, follow best practices, adhere to infection, prevention and control guidelines, as well as consulting manufactures cleaning recommendations for instruments. Team members are committed to continually learning about any changes in these areas. The teams work with keen eyes, strong knowledge and the highest commitment to quality and safety.
