Scott Stewart, social worker

Many 4Y residents at the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre have minimal support from family and friends. What they do have is Scott, a social worker and committed advocate who strives to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Scott supports residents to be as independent as possible. Along with being a voice of advocacy, he is a voice of reason, clearly presenting courses of action that are in the client’s best interest. He educates residents and other involved parties about the importance of balance between safety, independence and quality of life.

Scott honours diversity and engages with a variety of groups to broaden inclusion on his unit. His efforts include inaugurating National Week for Truth and Reconciliation and spearheading the LGBTQ2S Communities Pride Day.

He has also developed many partnerships and initiatives across Covenant Health to enhance the resident experience. He advocated for the Virtual Reality Program, acquiring the equipment for residents to have an amazing virtual reality experience and explore activities and places they would otherwise not be able to. He is also making progress on implementing an interactive technology that stimulates senses and encourages purposeful play for residents who have decreased cognition.

Scott regularly goes above and beyond. He advocates for residents and seeks out opportunities for them to improve their health in what is often a challenging environment.
