The Grey Nuns Community Hospital reassignment subcommittee was developed in response to the rapidly changing needs of increased patient support in the ICU. The subcommittee organized staff scheduling, reassignment location planning, FTE allocation and became a reliable contact for staff concerns and issues.

The committee focused on both the best interests of the staff and patients in the ICU. This work required a keen sense of balance to support the many variations of needs for the staff while still ensuring the ICU was well supported. It was crucial for the success of reassignment that all staff requests be considered on a case-by-case basis to provide opportunity for success within the ICU.

Through each wave of the pandemic, the subcommittee has kept the best interests of both the site and the reassigned staff at the forefront. They embraced the concept of teamwork and were successful by working together to collectively manage a large group of staff who were anxious, worried and concerned about working in a new area so unfamiliar. This team has been described as chess player experts where each moving piece is critical to the success of the next move. The reassignment subcommittee became experts in these moving pieces to ensure multiple needs were met despite competing priorities.
