Shawna Sharun, licensed practical nurse

Shawna Sharun, a licensed practical nurse, leads by example. She arrives early for shifts and maintains professionalism with staff, patients, families and other stakeholders. Shawna makes everyone feel welcome. Her calm approach to stressful situations helps promote strength and confidence within clinical and nonclinical teams.

She is a team player. Shawna engages with team members and offers help when needed. She makes colleagues feel like valued members of the nursing team. She works with the allied team ensuring patients are set up for success with their physiotherapy plans. She holds herself to the highest standard and mentors staff to this high level too.

Shawna volunteers her time with hospital committees and collaborations. She volunteers to take on students, orients new employes and participates in ad hoc projects that improve patients' safety and care. Shawna is an active union representative who supports the staff. In union meetings, she listens carefully, making it easier for people to share their thoughts.

She cares for her patients. Shawna engages visitors, families and volunteers to actively take part in the patients’ care plans, care needs and safe discharges home. She ensures patients’ needs are being met or addressed prior to discharge. She advocates for her patients and families at care planning, rounding and transition rounding. She speaks up if she has a concern or feels more can be done to support transitions.
