Doris Goranson, volunteer

A commitment to her Catholic faith and a desire to serve others inspired Doris Goranson to volunteer at St. Teresa Place when her husband, Floyd, moved into the site in 2017. After volunteering with the monthly Catholic mass, Doris recognized an opportunity to create a group for people to pray the rosary together. Residents expressed their desire to connect to their Catholic roots.

Doris demonstrates her dedication to the residents at the site by continuing to lead the group for five years despite the progression of her husband’s illness and complications with her own health. Floyd passed away in September 2023. Another group member led the group in Doris’ absence, but the week following her husband’s passing she was back with the group. Doris’ ability to be present for people in both joy and sorrow is valued by residents and staff.

During the late stage of Floyd’s illness, his family gave him an interactive therapy dog named Rex. Floyd bonded with Rex and enjoyed the companionship. After Floyd’s passing, Doris and her family gave Rex to the recreation department which uses him as a therapeutic tool for residents who need companionship.

Doris is part treasured part of the St. Teresa family.
