Shelley Todd, LPN supervisor
Shelley has the most wonderful approach with her residents when it comes to involving them in their own care at Villa Marie. She will ask rather than tell, model rather than do, and always includes the resident first. This small act of respect is not lost on her fellow teammates and is always appreciated by the families she supports.
Shelley is always coming up with creative ways to involve residents in their own care. For one resident, it is very important to have her own fruit added to her oatmeal every day. To support that, the care plan reflects that the resident will prepare her oatmeal in her suite with the kitchen's oatmeal and her own fruit from her fridge. It is a multi-step process that requires assistance from the kitchen, health care aides and nursing, but Shelley supported it because it is important to the resident as it maintains her independence and provides her the comfort of having the same meal she had at home.
Shelley is an incredible advocate for her patients and will speak out for them when it comes to connecting with physicians, families and any other tough conversations that need to be had. There are many residents in long-term care that cannot speak for themselves and therefore, as a nurse, Shelley has to rely on other signs of distress/illness/injury and pain. Shelley is also incredibly consistent in her practice. You know that you can trust Shelley to follow through with what she will say she will do, and that creates such a wonderful sense of ease on a unit.
