Florentino Belista, health care aide

Florentino exemplifies justice and love for marginalized individuals. Not long after Florentino moved to the evening shift, a new Indigenous resident arrived at St. Teresa Place. Florentino was the first one to learn about her and he called the resident by her preferred name.

The resident assured him that her son would help her unpack. Unfortunately, this didn't happen and Florentino responded with kindness to a very vulnerable, isolated woman, mourning the loss of another son and having difficulties with her transition. Soon after the resident moved in, Florentino was in her suite unpacking her belongings and organizing them in the proper places.

Florentino also demonstrated justice and compassion for a vulnerable resident who had a support dog in her suite. She was often unable to care for him. Florentino would go into the suite, help her feed the dog and even cleaned up after him. Regardless of the obstacles, Florentino serves the vulnerable who have a history of exclusion.

Florentino has a significant positive effect on staff, residents and family members. His smile and large heart promote social justice for all. He inspires people to accept others’ differences, be nonjudgmental and serve everyone with compassion.
