Brenda Neuman, recreational therapist
Respect is at the heart of Brenda’s work as a recreational therapist on Unit 4Y at the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre. It’s a unit that’s home to an incredibly diverse group of residents – people with differing backgrounds, experiences, capacities and challenges. Brenda strives to maximize each resident’s experience and quality of life through individual and group activities that respect their unique qualities.
Many residents are Indigenous, so Brenda has learned more about Indigenous culture, local supports and resources to help them connect with their culture. She also supports LGBTQ2S+ residents who often feel isolated and have experienced discrimination. She strongly advocates for residents to feel comfortable and supported in their sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.
Brenda’s office is open to residents and their loved ones as well as staff who want to discuss concerns, make plans or simply share their day. She provides wisdom, experience and a caring perspective to everyone who approaches her. She often serves as mediator when conflicts or challenges arise on the unit.
Brenda embodies respect. She sees people as who they can be. She understands their beliefs and values and strives to build a sense of community where everyone belongs.
