Volunteer COVID responders
During COVID-19, when many facilities suspended or cancelled their volunteer engagement, the Misericordia Community Hospital was one of the few acute care sites that had high participation in the zone. Many volunteers were engaged and served on site and virtually.
Volunteers made more than 6,700 fabric masks for patients, staff and physicians. They also knit, sewed, and crocheted sets of “connecting hearts”, one to be kept by the patient and one to be given to a loved one, to help them feel connected. They organized a campaign to create more than 5,000 origami cranes to lift the spirits of patients and staff. Volunteers served as door screeners, emergency greeters, and PPE distributors. Those involved in the P.A.R.T.Y. program offered virtual sessions for students.
The volunteers at Misericordia Community Hospital are united by a calling to serve with kindness and compassion and to provide dignity for the vulnerable and hope to the hurting in a variety of ways. This community of caring volunteers came together wanting to serve, making ours a more just and compassionate society.
